Arc blockchain vs Ethereum: gas, finality, stablecoins, apps (2026)
Arc and Ethereum both run the EVM, but Arc charges gas in USDC instead of ETH, finalizes blocks in under one second instead of about 13 minutes, and launched on 16 September 2026 with a permissioned validator set. Ethereum is older, more decentralized and deeper in apps. arky, the trading terminal on Circle's Arc chain, runs on Arc.
A fair, sourced comparison of Circle's Arc blockchain and Ethereum mainnet as of October 2026. Arc wins on fee predictability and settlement speed; Ethereum wins on decentralization, age and ecosystem depth. Every cell links to a primary source.
How does Arc compare to Ethereum? (spec table, as of Oct 2026)
| Spec | Arc (mainnet) | Ethereum (mainnet) |
|---|---|---|
| Gas token | USDC (Arc docs: add Arc to a wallet) | ETH (ethereum.org: gas) |
| Fee denomination | Dollars: fees are paid in USDC and smoothed with a moving-average base fee; minimum 20 gwei maxFeePerGas (Arc docs: system overview) | Gwei of ETH, so the dollar cost moves with the ETH price; the base fee is burned (ethereum.org: gas) |
| Finality | Deterministic, under one second, no reorgs (Arc docs: system overview) | 12-second slots; finality after about two epochs, roughly 13 minutes (ethereum.org: proof of stake) |
| Consensus | Malachite (Tendermint BFT), proof of authority (Arc docs: system overview) | Proof of stake since September 2022 (ethereum.org: proof of stake) |
| Validators | Permissioned: a founding cohort of 11 named institutions, including BlackRock, DTCC, Visa and Mastercard (Circle press release, 16 Sept 2026) | Permissionless: anyone who deposits 32 ETH (ethereum.org: proof of stake) |
| Execution / EVM | Reth client (Arc docs: system overview); "fully EVM-compatible" (Circle press release, 16 Sept 2026) | The EVM is Ethereum's own execution environment (ethereum.org: EVM) |
| Native stablecoin | USDC is the native gas asset; EURC and USYC are also issued on Arc (Arc docs: contract addresses) | None native; USDC is an ERC-20 token issued by Circle (circle.com/usdc) |
| Mainnet launch | 16 September 2026 (Circle press release, 16 Sept 2026) | 30 July 2015 (ethereum.org: history) |
| Ecosystem maturity | Young: more than 100 apps announced at launch (Circle press release, 16 Sept 2026) | About 11 years of apps, tokens, tooling and audits (ethereum.org: history) |
| Governance token | ARC minted at genesis (10 billion), not launched (arc.io, 16 Sept 2026) | ETH is the native asset and staking token (ethereum.org: proof of stake) |
Values checked on 5 October 2026. Arc is three weeks old, so check docs.arc.io before relying on any parameter that might change, such as the validator set.
Is Arc cheaper than Ethereum?
For ordinary transactions, yes, and the cost is also more predictable because it is quoted in dollars. At the 20 gwei base fee we read from the Arc RPC on 5 October 2026, a plain transfer (21,000 gas) cost 0.00042 USDC; see Arc network details for the method. On Ethereum, the same 21,000 gas is priced in ETH, so its dollar cost rises and falls with both network demand and the ETH price (ethereum.org: gas). We do not quote a single Ethereum fee because it changes block by block.
Is Arc faster than Ethereum?
Yes, for finality. An Arc transaction is final as soon as it is in a block, in under a second, and cannot be reorganized (Arc docs: system overview). We measured an average Arc block time of about 0.51 seconds on 5 October 2026. Ethereum produces a block every 12 seconds, and a block becomes finalized after about two epochs, roughly 13 minutes (ethereum.org: proof of stake). Many Ethereum apps act after one or a few confirmations, which is faster than full finality but carries a small reorg risk.
Is Arc EVM-compatible like Ethereum?
Yes. Circle describes Arc as "fully EVM-compatible, so existing Solidity contracts and developer tools work on day one" (Circle press release, 16 Sept 2026). The same addresses, the same wallets (MetaMask, Rabby and others) and the same libraries work. Three details differ: the native balance is USDC with 18 decimals while the USDC token contract uses 6, wallets must set at least 20 gwei maxFeePerGas, and transactions are either pending or final, with no "included but reversible" state (Arc docs: add Arc to a wallet).
Where is Arc weaker than Ethereum?
- Decentralization. Arc's validators are a permissioned proof-of-authority set of regulated institutions (Arc docs: system overview); Ethereum's are open to anyone with 32 ETH. Arc says it is exploring a transition toward proof of stake in 2027 (arc.io, 16 Sept 2026).
- Ecosystem depth. Ethereum has about 11 years of deployed apps, audited contracts and liquidity. Arc has existed on mainnet since 16 September 2026, so many tokens and markets are new and thinly traded.
- Track record. Arc's consensus and client stack have weeks of mainnet history, not years.
- Roadmap items are not live. The opt-in privacy features and other planned extensions in the Arc docs are not available yet (Arc docs: system overview).
Where is Arc stronger than Ethereum?
- One asset for everything. You hold USDC for both trading and gas; no second token to top up.
- Settlement you can act on. Sub-second deterministic finality means a fill is done when you see it.
- Dollar fees. Fees are paid in USDC and smoothed, so a fee estimate in dollars stays meaningful.
- Native Circle rails. USDC moves in and out over Circle CCTP (Arc is CCTP domain 26, Arc docs: contract addresses); see bridge USDC to Arc.
What does Arc vs Ethereum mean for traders?
For a trader, Arc removes two frictions: you never need ETH for gas, and orders settle in under a second in the same dollars you trade with. The trade-off is a younger market: fewer tokens, newer contracts and less liquidity than Ethereum. That is the gap arky fills. arky is the trading terminal of Arc, live on Arc mainnet, where you can:
- trade memecoins on Arc that launch on a bonding curve and graduate to a Uniswap v4 pool;
- bet on Bitcoin up or down in 5- and 15-minute rounds, and on crypto prediction markets, settled in USDC on Arc;
- swap spot with USDC trading on Arc, and open crypto perps on about 35 majors with USDC moved from Arc;
- ask Scout, the AI agent every user gets, which answers from live arky data and proposes trades your wallet signs.

FAQ
Is Arc better than Ethereum?
Neither is better across the board. Arc is faster to finality (under one second) and charges gas in USDC, which suits payments and trading; Ethereum is far older, more decentralized, and has a much larger set of apps, tokens and liquidity.
Is Arc built on Ethereum?
No. Arc is its own layer-1 blockchain with its own consensus (Malachite, a Tendermint BFT engine) and execution client (Reth). It is EVM-compatible, so Ethereum tools and Solidity contracts work on it, but it does not settle to Ethereum.
Is Arc EVM-compatible?
Yes. Circle says Arc is fully EVM-compatible, so existing Solidity contracts and developer tools work on it. The main differences a wallet or app notices are USDC as the native gas token (18 decimals), a 20 gwei minimum fee and no pending-after-inclusion state.
Do I need ETH to use Arc?
No. Arc uses USDC as its native gas token, so a wallet holding only USDC can pay every fee on Arc. You only need ETH for gas on Ethereum itself.
Is Arc more centralized than Ethereum?
Yes, today. Arc runs a proof-of-authority validator set of named institutions chosen by Circle, while anyone can run an Ethereum validator by staking 32 ETH. Arc says it plans a move toward proof of stake in 2027.
